FOOD

I read what I consider to be a truly great article this morning in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). It was called "Technology, Diet and the Burden of Chronic Disease" written by David Ludwig MD,PhD. It was short (2 pages) but clear, concise and in my opinion truly profound. The upshot was that the vast majority of chronic disease is directly related to the evolution in food which has occurred over the last 200 years. This is not new and not earth-shattering but I was struck by how simply worded and clear the information was delivered. Ultraprocessing is at the heart of the problem. By becoming slaves to convenience, ease and speed, we as a society have literally thrown away our health and well-being. Fast food and processed food replaces micronutrients, fiber and phytochemicals (the building blocks of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes) with low quality and unhealthful fats and high calorie sugars. In addition, water is taken out and processed food is much denser in calories. This alone explains our obesity epidemic and the overwhelming burden of chronic disease. Sodas and colas are not discussed but everyone knows that they are co-conspirators in our health woes.

The good news remains that: we have the power to regain our power and our health. The authors cite good suggestions for us as individuals and us as a society to combat this truly insane sacrifice that we as a society have made. Health and well-being has been forsaken in the quest for speed, convenience, palatability and profit to the companies which produce our truly toxic fare. This madness can end whenever we say, "STOP". There is another way and it is truly life-enhancing rather than life-destructing.

I agree with your terminology of 'Madness' when describing our increasing indolence towards how we attempt to nourish the trillions of living cells that make up our human form.
What is truly powerful is our capacity to choose what is healthiful when supporting our ever changing bodies.
Thanks for emphasizing the importance of what we put into our bodies on a daily basis.

$$$

I received my bills this week. $ 32,000 for the Liberation Procedure. $1200 for MRV. Amazingly, my insurance(Blue Cross) covered all but $5000 of the total. I feel so fortunate that it was largely covered. I have sat on Utilization Review Committees(when I worked at Scripps) and thought the insurance company would deny coverage based on the experimental nature of the procedure. Luckily for me, I was wrong! I guess they just cannot deny need for treatment of blocked blood vessels.

New Direction

I have used this website for several purposes. First, I used it to discover the magic of the internet and the power of cyber-connection. I realized my love of writing and found my voice. Next, I documented my own personal healing which was a combination of the miracle of technological advance with the development of a new perception of an old malady. I then documented my "comeback" and return to health and well-being and the wide variety of learning and experiences which facilitated my steady progress. Next, I used the site to help me create a vision of the doctor I wanted to be and the practice I wished to offer. More recently, I have continued to clarify my thoughts and feelings on the essential components of healing. Now, I wish to again re-focus and concentrate on what I believe from my deepest knowing to be the new paradigm in medicine. I have worked in and studied our "broken" system and love it for the miracles it has brought and continues to bring. However, ...

Connecting to the World

This is a picture from the Eucalyptus Grove At UCSD -- my dogs' favorite walk. Upon our return from our adventure, I read this from Buddhist psychologist, Rick Hanson. I really resonate with this aspect of connection. Connecting is in 3 directions -- inside with oneself, with others and with the world. When we strengthen one direction, we simultaneously strengthen our general connection. This is guidance to connect more deeply with the world. What makes you feel connected? I'd like to know.   Are we really so separate? The Practice   Love the world. Why?   Your brain evolved in three stages (to simplify a complex process): Reptile - Brainstem, focused on AVOIDING harm Mammal - Limbic system, focused on APPROACHING rewards Primate - Cortex, focused on ATTACHING to "us" With a fun use (to me, at least) of animal themes, the first JOT in this series -  pet the lizard  - was about how to soothe the most ancient structures of the...
