Technology

We live in truly remarkable times. Nearly every day, there is something new technologically which makes life easier and often better. Smart phone technology is racing forward providing miraculous power in the palm of your hand. The full power of the internet is now available 24/7 in almost all locations. Medical "apps" are providing instant access to "libraries" of knowledge and insight. Soon (actually already available), you can have an EKG and echocardiogram of your heart through a smart phone on command. The XBOX 360 Kinect program is making home exercise, yoga, Tai Chi available at all times with ongoing interactive, helpful feedback built in and remarkably effective. There is truly nothing that seems impossible. The race is on to bring all of this miraculous technology to an ever-growing market. This technology costs but will be available globally and universally for remarkably reasonable investment. Connection between people is now unlimited by time and space

A Poem from a Client

Who is the Shuffle Master? One day I woke up only to find The voices I heard were not really mine They came from tapes in the distant past Who would have thought time would allow them to last. Fear of death and no self belief Why was I dealt these Cards of Grief? Why was I chosen? I’ve always been kind Who was the Shuffle Master Of the cards in my mind ? Then a precious, gently soul took my hand Guided me to a mirror and said “now stand” As I stared at the reflection Clarity I came to see, The Shuffle Master Of the cards has always been me. Now the truth is out And setting myself free will be determined by Which cards I keep Or forever let be.

Taking the Trip Down from the Head to the Heart

I have spent my life studying, learning and trying to understand the way things work. I make my living with talking through problems. I have always thought and believed the mind to be central to my being and the key to human health and healing. While I still value my mind, brain and thinking capacity, I am quickly coming to a new perspective. I have come to recognize that healing happens through the heart (not the mind) and that feelings (and their expression) are truly the vehicles for healing and transformation. Thinking and thoughts are important parts of being human and powerful capacities but the "shifts" that allow people to return to health and happiness as well as create new things, evolve out of expressions of deep emotion (like crying). While I have spent my life trying to "figure things out", all this has led to is endless thinking, thought, rumination and obsession. One deep release of emotion does way more for a person than years and decades of thinking

Connection

From the core of my being, I have believed that connection with self and others is the key to health and happiness. I have spent my medical career focusing on those that are disconnected. Widows, widowers, seniors, isolated individuals because of medical illness or their own choice have always been on my radar screen. Why? I am not sure -- I just have always felt a sensitivity for these people. As I do my work and build my practice, I believe I am getting closer to making headway with these folks. Speaking their language and being comfortable in the dialogue are essential. "The way in is through" applies to this situation as openness and frankness seems far more helpful than skirting the issue. In truth, I believe, we all have the tendency to isolate and "wall ourselves off" when we do not feel physically or emotionally well. The fact is that we ARE separate individuals in separate bodies despite the truth that "we are all one". The beginning of healing, t

Time Out

Yesterday was an amazing day in San Diego -- a county-wide power outage which shut down our thriving metropolis. I was "fortunate enough" to be a long way from home in North County in paralyzed traffic but with no urgent need to get anywhere. Not being very tolerant of traffic, I pulled off and stopped at a local park in Vista. Amidst the full-fledged craziness on the road and all over the county, I spent 4 hours in a quiet park in the shade under a tree. I met a really nice guy (Raymond) who found refuge from the craziness at the same spot. We talked for several hours and while he has a very different life from me, we connected in a real way. After the the sun had set, I ventured home amidst minimal traffic. The world was "eerily quiet" on my arrival home and Grace was already asleep. The quiet and the radical change from everyday life was powerful for me. It made me reflect in a way I don't usually do effectively and made life seem clearer. The "forced qu

The Heart of Healing

In my current model of helping people with their medical challenges, I have the opportunity to see things with "new" eyes. As I am not rushed, I can fully explore peoples' challenges from a medical, emotional and spiritual perspective. The results are fascinating and very worthy of sharing as I believe that "true" solutions can and do arise and major shifts can evolve. It is truly exciting. At the core of my recent revelations is the age-old concept of "separation". We are separate people living in separate bodies living separate lives. Yes, this is undoubtedly true. However, some of us are particularly and quite strongly affected by this truth. Most notably, when life slows down as in the senior years or with illness or injury, loneliness can creep in (or storm in) and intensify and complicate the situation. Many people are not adversely affected by being alone. People who received love and value from both of their parents, people from large, lovi
