Equanimity

Equanimity (Latinæquanimitas having an even mind; aequus even animus mind/soul) is a state of psychological stability and composure which is undisturbed by experience of or exposure to emotions, pain, or other phenomena that may cause others to lose the balance of their mind. The virtue and value of equanimity is extolled and advocated by a number of major religions and ancient philosophies.

At Pando, we are attempting to guide our clients and all interested seekers to find a source of internal power. By internal power, I mean a state of being that is supportive and nurturing to whatever disease state or external condition that confronts us. If we can find a state of internal quiet and balance (equanimity), we are capable of working with any challenge that we meet on the road of life -- including disease states, emotional challenges and even death. So, we focus on helping our clients develop, nurture and strengthen from the inside - out. While this is opposite to the work done in standard medicine, it can make the work of medicine and healing infinitely more powerful and efficacious. When an individual is stable and quiet on the inside, any challenge is mastered and handled more skillfully and without strife.

It is remarkable how different healing and the pursuit of health can be when one is centered and stable. When the hormones adrenaline and cortisol are quiet, our bodies can transform in remarkable ways. Memory and balance are better; sleep is more restful and rejuvenating; blood pressure lowers and smoothes out; heart rate variability stabilizes; blood sugars come back to normal; the immune system expands and strengthens; thoughts achieve more clarity and insight; health-promoting genes are even turned on. The body is a miracle waiting to experience its magnificence.

The Pando Method of learning to communicate openly and honestly while hearing and experiencing the thoughts and feelings of others without judgment, in combination with gentle, nurturing, restorative body movement and accessing the quiet rest of meditation frequently throughout the day leads to this internal state of equanimity. Creating a peaceful internal state gives us all the power to be more of who we want to be.

$$$

I received my bills this week. $ 32,000 for the Liberation Procedure. $1200 for MRV. Amazingly, my insurance(Blue Cross) covered all but $5000 of the total. I feel so fortunate that it was largely covered. I have sat on Utilization Review Committees(when I worked at Scripps) and thought the insurance company would deny coverage based on the experimental nature of the procedure. Luckily for me, I was wrong! I guess they just cannot deny need for treatment of blocked blood vessels.

New Direction

I have used this website for several purposes. First, I used it to discover the magic of the internet and the power of cyber-connection. I realized my love of writing and found my voice. Next, I documented my own personal healing which was a combination of the miracle of technological advance with the development of a new perception of an old malady. I then documented my "comeback" and return to health and well-being and the wide variety of learning and experiences which facilitated my steady progress. Next, I used the site to help me create a vision of the doctor I wanted to be and the practice I wished to offer. More recently, I have continued to clarify my thoughts and feelings on the essential components of healing. Now, I wish to again re-focus and concentrate on what I believe from my deepest knowing to be the new paradigm in medicine. I have worked in and studied our "broken" system and love it for the miracles it has brought and continues to bring. However, ...

Connecting to the World

This is a picture from the Eucalyptus Grove At UCSD -- my dogs' favorite walk. Upon our return from our adventure, I read this from Buddhist psychologist, Rick Hanson. I really resonate with this aspect of connection. Connecting is in 3 directions -- inside with oneself, with others and with the world. When we strengthen one direction, we simultaneously strengthen our general connection. This is guidance to connect more deeply with the world. What makes you feel connected? I'd like to know.   Are we really so separate? The Practice   Love the world. Why?   Your brain evolved in three stages (to simplify a complex process): Reptile - Brainstem, focused on AVOIDING harm Mammal - Limbic system, focused on APPROACHING rewards Primate - Cortex, focused on ATTACHING to "us" With a fun use (to me, at least) of animal themes, the first JOT in this series -  pet the lizard  - was about how to soothe the most ancient structures of the...
